EV Charger Installation in Alabama: A Practical Guide Before You Buy

Published 2026-03-08  |  Lightning Bolt Electric  |  Alabama

Charging on a standard 120V outlet adds roughly three to five miles of range per hour. A Level 2 circuit takes that to twenty-five or forty. For most drivers that is the difference between planning your week around charging and simply never thinking about it.

Hardwired unit or 14-50 outlet?

A hardwired charger supports higher continuous current, removes the plug as a heat and failure point, and can be installed outdoors more cleanly. A NEMA 14-50 outlet lets you unplug the unit and take it with you, and suits a portable EVSE. Both are perfectly good. If you charge a large battery from low every night, hardwired is the better long-term choice.

Do you need a panel upgrade?

Not as often as people are told. The correct process is a load calculation against your actual service and existing loads. Where capacity is tight, options in order of cost are: dial the charger down to a lower continuous output, fit a load management device that sheds the charger when the house draws hard, or upgrade the service. Only the last one is expensive, and it is frequently avoidable. More on panel upgrades.

What a good install looks like

  • Circuit sized for continuous duty at 125 percent of the charger's output
  • Conduit or properly supported cable, not cable stapled across a garage wall at head height
  • Terminations torqued to spec — the main cause of overheating at the breaker
  • Outdoor runs weather-rated, with expansion fittings where the run is long
  • GFCI protection where required for the installation type
  • Permit pulled and inspection arranged
  • A charge test before the electrician leaves, not just a light on the unit

How long it takes

A garage install near the panel is three to five hours. A detached garage, a long exterior run, or a job that needs a sub panel is a full day. We tell you which one yours is before booking.

Questions worth asking any installer

  1. Will you run a load calculation, and can I see it?
  2. Is the price fixed, and what would change it?
  3. Who pulls the permit?
  4. Is the circuit sized for the charger's maximum or the setting you plan to use?
  5. How is the run protected where it crosses the garage or the exterior?
