Electrical Panel Upgrade Cost in Alabama: What Drives the Price in 2026
Panel upgrade quotes in Alabama vary more than almost any other electrical job, and the reason is simple: two houses with identical panels can need wildly different amounts of work behind them. Here is what actually moves the number.
The five things that set the price
1. Target amperage
Going from 100 amp to 200 amp service is the most common upgrade we do. It costs more than a like-for-like panel swap because the service entrance conductors, the meter base and sometimes the mast all have to be sized up with it. A straight 200 amp panel replacement where the service is already 200 amp is a considerably smaller job.
2. Condition of the service entrance
If the cable from the weatherhead to the meter is undersized, brittle, or has been spliced at some point in its life, it gets replaced. This is the single biggest hidden variable in a quote, and it is why phone estimates for panel work are usually wrong.
3. Where the panel lives
A panel on an exterior wall next to the meter is straightforward. A panel in a finished basement, twenty feet of interior wall away from the meter, with a dozen circuits that are now too short to reach the new cabinet, is a different job. Circuit extensions add real hours.
4. Grounding and bonding
Older Alabama homes frequently have grounding that predates current requirements — a single rod, or a water pipe bond that no longer works because the incoming line was replaced with plastic. New ground rods and proper bonding get added as part of the upgrade.
5. What else has to be brought along
Arc fault protection on certain circuits, GFCI protection where required, whole house surge protection, or a sub panel for a garage or shop. These are optional-ish, but most people doing a panel once in thirty years take the chance to do them.
Signs you actually need the upgrade
- A fuse box, or a 60 or 100 amp main in a house with modern appliances
- Breakers that trip when the AC and the dryer run together
- Lights dimming noticeably when the compressor kicks in
- Double-tapped breakers — two circuits landed on one breaker
- Rust inside the cabinet, or a panel that feels warm to the touch
- No space left for a new circuit you need
- An EV, a heat pump, a hot tub or a shop on the way
Do you need 200 amp for an EV charger?
Often not, and this is where a lot of money gets spent unnecessarily. A proper load calculation frequently shows that a 100 or 125 amp service can carry a Level 2 charger, especially with a load management device or the charger dialled to a lower continuous output. How long it takes
Most residential panel replacements are a single day, with power off for part of it. We agree the outage window in advance. Commercial work is usually staged after hours so the business never closes. Permits and the utility disconnect and reconnect are handled on our side.
