Do You Need a Whole House Generator in Alabama? Honest Answer

Published 2026-03-25  |  Lightning Bolt Electric  |  Alabama

Alabama gets severe storm seasons, and outages here are measured in days rather than hours more often than most states. That does not automatically mean everyone needs a whole house generator. Here is how to work out what you actually need.

Three levels of backup

Portable generator with an inlet and interlock

Cheapest by a wide margin. You already own the generator, or you buy one for a few hundred dollars. We install an exterior inlet box and either a transfer switch or a panel interlock so you can power selected circuits safely. You start it manually and refuel it. Good for people who lose power once or twice a year and mainly want the fridge and a few lights.

Never backfeed a generator through a wall outlet. It energises the utility line and can kill line workers.

Critical-load standby system

An automatic standby generator sized to cover essentials only — refrigeration, well or sump pump, furnace or air handler fan, internet, a few lighting and outlet circuits, and medical equipment if relevant. Starts itself, transfers automatically, costs meaningfully less than whole house coverage. This is the sweet spot for most Alabama homes.

Whole house standby

Covers everything including central air. Larger unit, larger gas supply, higher price. Worth it for larger homes, home offices that cannot go dark, and anyone who has decided they simply do not want to think about outages again.

Sizing without guessing

We run a load calculation and give you the numbers for both critical-load and whole-house coverage so you can choose with real figures rather than a salesperson's recommendation. Air conditioning is usually what pushes a system from one category to the other.

The transfer switch is the important part

An automatic transfer switch senses the outage, starts the engine, waits for it to stabilise and moves the load across — typically inside thirty seconds. When utility power returns it transfers back and runs a cool-down. Done properly, the only thing you notice is a brief flicker.

Maintenance matters more than the brand

Generators fail on the night you need them because of a dead battery, old oil or a clogged filter — not because of the badge on the front. Annual service and a real load test is the difference between an expensive ornament and working backup power.
